Artist's Comments

I have been in a funk for a while and decided to push my limits once more. Since my previous progress was in coloring linework, I decided to print off a basic photo of a famous figure (Einstein) from WikiCommons and trace a few of the basic lines. I did everything from there, using the original sepia image as reference. While there are some errors, it am generally pleased with the end result.

Made in the GIMP and available for anyone's use. Please feel free to drop me a note if you use the image, simply so that I know that someone found it of some value. I think I will actually make this one available as a print.

not bad. Image has no real life but that kinda things takes years of experience. quite recognizable and so technically a good rendition.

Very very good technique. You've very much mastered colouring with the GIMP.

Angela's right about the lack of life, though. I think it's mostly because of the eyes. They appear detached from the rest of the body. Better shading in and around them would help correct that, though.

*nods* Yeah, I see what you mean. The edges are a little too sharp on the eyes and they seem a little flat. I have been focusing on the problems with the jacket and tie being far too sharp.

And of course now I see that I accidentally erased part of the shadows on the jacket. Ug.

Thanks though, I think that the project worked out on a whole. I am shocked at how well the skin and hair turned out, especially the hair which freaked me out something fierce.

Thanks. : ) I am trying to figure out if the low saturation and lower contrast effect on the skin/hair hurt the piece in terms of the life or not. The eyes do need a little work to integrate them with the face better.

Nice; you're getting better. :D

Like the previous comments state, I think he could use some more work through the eyes. Also, some more definition around his nose. Higher contrast shading will also help the image "pop".

Thanks for linking me here; it's good to see how much you've progressed. :)
